Most people struggling to lose fat look for the latest gimmick, gadget, trick, tip, or technique in their struggle to get in shape.

Still out of shape after trying the latest and greatest “lose weight fast” do-dad, most give up. Then they gain even more weight, then try again some time down the road, only to repeat the pattern once again in a vicious, never-ending cycle.

The one thing that people unsuccessfully trying to lose fat have in common is their “out of whack” diet, even if they think it’s good.

There are several reasons why…

1. Most people don’t actually track the amount of food they put into their bodies. They assume they’re eating a certain number of calories when in fact they’re taking in quite a bit more. And, you can gain fat even eating only healthy foods.

2. They unknowingly eat foods that promote hunger and an out of whack hormonal response (which tends to increase, not decrease fat storage).

3. They don’t think ”Lifestyle Change”. Instead, they want the quick-fix diet. You need to find a diet that you can live with, is satisfying to you, and helps promote fat loss and good health.

Notice I haven’t even spoken about exercise. Exercise should not be the primary focus when wanting to lose fat. Exercise is important, but getting your diet in order first is much more significant in its ability to allow you to shed unwanted pounds. Why? Because you cannot out-train a bad diet… period! Get your diet straight first, or else you may never get in shape.

Here’s some rules you can follow to help you…

RULE #1: DON’T PUT THE OFFENDING FOOD IN THE HOUSE IN THE FIRST PLACE!

Your kids may complain and you may feel like you’re depriving them (when in fact you’re harming them in 2 ways — by giving them junk food and teaching them it’s ok to eat it; a habit that will be hard to break when they grow up). Get over it! You’re the boss so do the right thing for them and for you.

Listen, I’m no better. If the offending food is in the house there’s a good chance I’ll eat it. So I make sure it’s never there. I promise you won’t miss it after awhile.

And this doesn’t mean you’ll have to stay away from your favorite foods forever either. In a second I’ll show you how you can occasionally eat them and still stay in great shape.

RULE #2: FOR 2 WEEKS WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING YOU EAT.

This does 2 things. It shows you really weren’t eating as little as you thought you were. And it reveals you eating quite a bit more ”forbidden” foods than you thought. RULE #3: GET A CALORIE COUNTING BOOK.

You can find these at any bookstore and they list the calories and protein/carbs/fat of most common foods. Or, get this one at Amazon.com The CalorieKing Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter 2009Take your list above and figure out how many calories you’re eating every day.

RULE #4: GET A FOOD SCALE.

I know…you think, ”what a pain!” But it’s only for 2-3 weeks. What happens is after consistently weighing your foods, you’ll get quite good at ”eyeballing” the proper portion sizes for you. You’ll have trained yourself to very accurately estimate the correct amounts for you. Or, get this highly recommended food scale at Amazon.com Weigh of Life Scale

Getting a better body starts (and ends) with your diet. If you don’t get it right you’ll never get into the kind of shape you’re after.

In Summary:

  1. Keep the bad foods out of your house
  2. Write down everything you eat (for only 2 weeks)
  3. PicoPad Food Journal 3-Pack

  4. Get a calorie counting book

Realistically, one can’t expect to stay away from ice cream, chocolate, cake, or cookies forever. I understand this because I struggle with it myself, maybe even worse than you do.

Here’s how you can have the best of both worlds.

ok here we go answer this one if you can
began 25 years ago weighted 189 pounds , flash dance came out so ,,,, what af eelin join gym worked out 3 times a week cut back on food lost 10 to 12 pounds , then hit wall. shortly after got preg first child gained back all weight plus 40 more pounds over 200 now busy being new mom whole life changed blah blah , next kid gained more weight over 300 pounds . diet and exercise , about 6 to ten different ones gained mnore weight. decided had tos top trying i keep gaining weight . went on welfare diet then eat 2 weeks out of the month strave last two weeks out of the month, did this for 15 years. here’s the thing had the same food budget every month kids were not straving so as they grew they ate more. i kept gaining weight,while eating less, but always on that pattern eating then straving.
so here is the truth at almost 50 just over 400 pounds. i was losing not by deiting just cuting things out and then i felt better and so i decided now that kids are moving on i could get back my life well i started getting in the pool joined gym trying to learn how to swim and taking water arebics, just cause it was fun, not readly to lose weight. but i started getting sick over and over different small problems . now having trouble walking moving around always in pain. dr. ( new one) won’t listen to me about how much pain i am in and doesn’t want me to use a scooter. that just means most days i can’t go out just sitting here , as i am gettingolder with srthris and diabetic neurophy , most days accept in pool i am in total pain . when i was young i could walk it off cn’t do that any more. so my question to you , i am not able to do anything for ever, i will m ost likely never work out 5 days a week for the rest of my life, i can’t diet for ever. so if i begin a program and stop won’t i just gain the weight back like before. and what is the point of doing another program unless you can do it for life and even then won’t your body adujust and you still gain the weight back

Cassandra. I am about to give you the most life-changing information you can ever hope to receive. First, you must stop fooling yourself. You know what you eat, and only you. Unless you have some massive hormonal problem (which I recommend you get checked out at by a doctor first), then there is another issue, which is the type and kind of foods you are putting into your body.

RUN… DON’T WALK… TO Y0UR NEAREST BOOKSTORE AND GET THE Ph Miracle Diet, by Robert O. Young, Ph.D. Follow his recommendations RELIGIOUSLY and WITHOUT FAIL. Short of anything else and you’re just sabotaging yourself. Don’t do this and you’re sabotaging yourself. Trying a little bit of it and not all and you’re sabotaging yourself. COMMIT TO IT 100% and then after 6 months of this get back to me. Don’t even get my program first. Get the book.
