Back Online

So, if you happened to notice, my blog has had some issues lately. This is my first post after getting it back online.

Seems when I went to upgrade to the latest version of Wordpress, some of my plugins didn’t communicate too well with this new version and my site went kaplooey! I didn’t have a lot of time to tinker with it and figure out what was happening, so it took over a week to get it back up.

Thanks to my good friend, Nicholas King, who finally helped me get it going again.

So thanks for your patience, and check out my next post where I’ll put up some of my 50th birthday “horseback” riding adventure photos thanks to a beautiful person, Katya.

Many of us, including myself, are parents. And needless to say, the problem with childhood obesity, especially here in the U.S. is more than apparent. In fact, childhood obesity has become an epidemic disease “eating away” at our children’s lives. Now this is a topic that hits me close to home since I am a concerned parent myself. I do my best to be an example to my child and I wanted to take the opportunity to encourage all of you to do the same for your children.

Children, from a young age, learn by observing. If they grow up seeing their parents leading healthy, active lifestyles, exercising and eating the right foods, they are much more likely

to do the same. On theĀ  , if parents tend to be sedentary and rely on fast foods, and unhealthy cooking habits, their kids are probably going to end up following in their footsteps since that is all they know. It is our jobs, as mothers and fathers of tomorrow’s generation to help reverse the trend of Type 2 Diabetes, premature aging, cardiovascular disease, stress-induced health problems, heart attacks, and perhaps even cancer (which researchers say may also be triggered by prolonged unhealthy eating habits).

How do we do this? Well, the answer is simple, although making changes to our current way of parenting may be difficult. Below are some guidelines for parents to try implementing at home.

1. Make exercise part of your daily life. Everyone, no matter how busy, can take at least 30 minutes out of the day to get some physical activity in. Make it a family affair by going to the park with your kids, for a family bike ride or jog, or by heading to the beach or pool for some fun in the sun.

2. Make home cooked meals. Now this is a big one. If you usually order take out or fast food you may be leading your kids (and yourself) down a very dangerous road. Learn some low-fat cooking techniques (like poaching, broiling, or grilling) and be sure to serve up controlled portions of balanced meals that include lean protein, fiber, complex carbs and low amounts of fat. Make dinner time sacred. Turn off the television and have the family sit down for the meal. Encourage family discussions which will help you bond and allows you to savor your food and eat at a controlled pace.

3. Teach your kids to drink LOTS of water. Most of us do not consume enough water throughout the day. this can lead to build upo of toxins in our bodies, dehydration, fatigue, and several other conditions that can be dangerous to our health.

4. ELIMINATE junk food from your house. If you know your kids dive into a bag of chips the minute they get home from school-why buy them? They are eating themselves into an early grave to say the least. Instead, buy fresh fruits and veggies, and have plenty healthy snacks in the fridge for your kids.

5. Brown bag your lunch and your kids’ lunches. Not only will you save money, but you will also be sure you and your family are eating right.

6. Teach your kids about the importance of MODERATION. Teach kids that an occasional, small treat every once in a while is o.k., so long as they exercise and eat the right foods on a regular basis. The problem comes when “once in a while” turns into “everyday” treats.

If you do these things already, congratulations! And if not, don’t beat yourself up about it! It’s never too late to be better than you were before. By becoming healthier individuals ourselves, we can in turn be better role models for our children.

There are hundreds of sites out there dedicated to weight loss for women. Now granted, many of these are great sites that I highly recommend checking out, but I did notice a somewhat disturbing trend in others. This trend is the idea that exercise, should be done for aesthetic purposes-to be the sexiest one out all your friends, or fit into your “skinny jeans” or pre-pregnancy size “0″ pants. Now, don’t get me wrong, the aesthetic (Or visible physical benefits) of exercise are great! I mean, c’mon, who here doesn’t want those washboard abs to flaunt on a sunny afternoon at the beach? What worries me about this is that many women can take this to an unhealthy extreme leading to physical, psychological, and emotional damage.

The fact is, the aesthetic benefits of exercise are an added bonus. Weight loss for women, men, or even children should focus on the health aspects

Weight loss for women has led to some very unhealthy trends in today's society.

for the individual above anything else. In a society where physical appearance is stressed anywhere and everywhere, it is scary to think what young women, especially (since this is the most highly-targeted group) are doing to lose weight. I have heard and seen some scary cases in which misinformation about weight loss and societal pressure led to devastating outcomes for once-healthy individuals who were led to think that they were “fat” or “chubby”.

So what can be done to prevent this trend from taking over the so-called “fitness” industry? Well for one, we need to teach young women that being “skinny” doesn’t necessarily mean being “healthy”-that exercise should add to quality of life and not be a form of torture in efforts to lose weight. We also need to correctly inform women of healthy ways of losing weight rather than encouraging “quick-fixes”.

And a major part of the battle can be won right at home. If you have a daughter, niece, or grand daughter, be sure to emphasize to her that being healthy rather than just losing weight is the way to go. Be an example to your kids by eating well and exercising yourself. Don’t obsess over physical appearance-this is easily picked up by your kids who look up to and admire you. Buy healthy foods and stay away from drive-thru meals. Encourage your kids to participate in sports at school or the local youth center rather than sitting in front of the television all afternoon.

Now on a last note, I am focusing in on women right now, just because, as I mentioned before, they are th most-highly targeted group of individuals for weight loss ads. But don’t forget that males also can-and many do-suffer from anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and body dysmorphia, among others. As a fitness trainer, it is devastating to see unhealthy trends pop-up in the fitness industry. Luckily, we can all do our part to help prevent these trends from negatively affecting both ourselves and our children.
