What a start to our day. It’s Sunday, Memorial Day weekend and we’re on a road trip to Kennedy Space Center Visitors Center.

Our start to the day began at 6:00 am. The day before we celebrated my son’s 5th birthday party with family and friends. As part of his birthday present we were taking him to where I worked for 21 years. It was May 21, 1961, when President Kennedy uttered his famous words,

“We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.”

Although I was not part of the Apollo program that landed a man on the moon ahead of President Kennedy’s goal of getting to the moon before the decade was over, I was able to interact with many of the engineers that were instrumental in helping get our first man on the moon. It was riveting hearing their stories.

This was a monumental undertaking considering we didn’t have the technology necessary to even fathom putting a man on the man. Just 8 years after Kennedy’s speech, we had a man on the moon. In all, 12 US men stepped on the moon’s surface.

So we’re on the road a little after 6 am and the first of the calamities of the morning started. First, the check engine light comes on. Checking the on board computer showed the oil level was low. An ominous message comes on the screen, “please stop and add oil to the engine. Driving without adding oil can cause serious damage to your engine”. We considered pulling over and checking it. But there was an exit a couple of miles ahead so decided to slow down (from close to 100 – more later on that).

At the gas station the next issue arrived. There was no synthetic oil to buy, as required by the manual. So we did what we had to do and got the dino grease (regular oil).

On our way again after killing the better part of 30 minutes, we were pressed to make up for lost time.

I wasn’t driving, and my wife was wondering if she should drive faster. There was a police officer that had pulled over a speeder about 1/2 mile in front of us and I uttered several $370 words… “there is no better time to go faster than when a police car is stopped on the side of the road giving someone a ticket.” [famous last words]. No sooner had she sped up to 90 mph prior to passing the police car on the side of the road than I heard her utter, “uh-oh!@” Looking in the side view mirror revealed what it was – another police car with flashing lights.

Not only did we get a ticket for speeding, but also for failing to slow down prior to approaching a police car pulled over at the side of the road (we didn’t know – now you do too).

The calamities (as my niece called them) continued to rain down on us.

A few miles after having pulled away from having gotten a ticket, we noticed the hood start to shake and vibrate. Seems it was not latched properly and was in danger of flying open. Pulling over (again!) we quickly slammed it shut and were on our way.

Finally, a couple of more miles down the road as we were talking, I was informed of a more personal tragedy… The planet Pluto was NOT, I repeat, not a real planet. What?!? I had grown up all my life knowing Pluto was the farthest planet in our solar system. But with the more accurate Hubble able to not only peer farther into the solar system, but more accurately as well, scientists had decided Pluto was in fact NOT a real planet. Imagine my shock! No joke. My fabled Pluto reduced to a mere large ice ball in the sky, part of the “Kuiper belt” that had literally hundreds and thousands of similarly sized objects.

At least Pluto being downgraded to a “dwarf planet” was the final calamity of the day. The rest of the day was spent enjoying the best of what the Kennedy Space center had to offer.

What does all of this have to do with getting in better shape, exercising, or supplements?

Everywhere we went there was nothing healthy to eat.

“No vegetables?… what do you mean you don’t have any vegetables… do you mean at all?”, was my pleading request for something healthy. “Nope… sorry….”, was the lame reply. It’s a really sorry world we’ve let ourselves turn in to. I would estimate at least 90-95% of the food I see for sale in restaurants and other eating establishments feature food that is not only harmful to your waistline, but your health too. It’s kind of sickening, really.

You know, I’ve said it many times that it’s ok to eat the occasional “planned” junk food. Junk food, strategically planned, can help accelerate your ability to lose weight and get in shape. But if it’s not “time” to eat junk food, is it too much to ask our eating establishments to at least keep some fresh food on the premises? It isn’t going to happen until we “demand” that more of it become available. This is where you and I come in to play, my dear reader. Make your voice heard, if we yell long and hard enough “they” will listen.

In the meantime the solution is to always come prepared. Bring some healthy snacks like almonds, walnuts, cashews, dried fruits, goji berries (found in your local health food store), currants (like raisins), water, some fresh fruit. These will do in a pinch, will be cheaper, and you’ll go a long way towards keeping your waist in check, and improving your health.
