Be Accountable To Someone Throughout Your Fitness Plan
ByOne of the most powerful things you can do to assure continued progress is to tell someone of your fitness plans. Psychologically, we are stronger at performing and keeping to a task if we tell someone we are going to do it. You are being held accountable to that person for following through on your promise to complete the program.
Ask this person to call or keep in touch with you on a regular basis. Then, provide them with feedback on your
progress. Tell this person that there may come a time in your fitness program when you’re struggling, and that, under no circumstances is he or she to be sympathetic with your struggles. Instruct them to do everything in their power to get you to continue on track. Give them a copy of your contract so they can see and use it, if need be, when the time comes.
When selecting the person whom you will hold yourself accountable to, choose carefully. There is a possibility that, if you chose the wrong person, instead of supporting your decision, they will attempt to talk you out of it and even ridicule your efforts. There are many reasons why this happens. Many people feel insecure about their own poor shape. They know they need to do something about their condition, but for a variety of reasons they don’t. When someone comes along and “upsets the apple cart,” so to speak, by reminding them of their own poor shape and eating habits, and the fact they don’t do anything about it, they become upset. In truth, they are upset with themselves, but instead of using this anger constructively, it is often reflected back on the person that caused the feelings to surface.
So, they may attempt to talk you out of doing what you have learned is the best way of transforming your body and life. In their own minds they think they’re doing you a favor by getting you to quit. Even well intentioned family and friends will try and sabotage your efforts if only to make themselves feel better about their own situation. PLEASE DON’T FALL FOR THIS! And it may become difficult because several friends or family member may attempt to derail you this way.
You will notice a pattern amongst those that support your decision for a new body from those that don’t. Those that

support are usually secure in themselves, and confident enough not to feel threatened by your quest for self-improvement. The majority of them will probably not be overweight, and if they are, are probably only marginally so. On the other side, those that attempt to “talk you out of it” will typically have a poor body image of themselves, probably because they are overweight and out of shape. These people may have attempted and failed at losing fat and getting in shape many times before, and definitely don’t want to see someone succeed at what they were, and continue to be, failures at.
It’s human nature to feel this way because if you do succeed, chances are they will feel even worse about themselves than before, at least at first. And although they typically are the last ones to support you in your efforts, they will eventually ask you to help them with their own programs. And rather then holding a grudge against them for their initially negative feelings, understand where they were coming from and provide them the help and encouragement they are now seeking from you. You will have the knowledge and power to allow truly miraculous changes to occur within this person, so don’t be selfish – give it away for free. The intangible gifts you’ll receive will come back to you ten-fold in return.
Finally, using a workout partner or buddy will help you tremendously in your goal for a better body. When you both commit to this program there is a sense of bonding and of not wanting to let the other person down. This feeling and sense of responsibility to one another may be that little extra you need that will allow you to fully follow through with this program to completion. If one morning you wake up and really don’t feel like working out, having a workout partner that you know is counting on you to be there at the gym may very well make the difference between your ultimate success and failure.
