Many people, including myself, take a multivitamin or supplement of some sort in hopes of making ourselves healthier, fitter, stronger

A well-balanced diet provides our bodies with essential nutrition vitamins and minerals we need.

A good diet provides us with essential nutrition vitamins.

people. But I also want to draw your attention to the importance of gettingĀ  nutrition vitamins directly from the foods you eat.You see, many people don’t realize that supplemental nutrition vitamins are just that-SUPPLEMENTS to your regular diet. If you are relying on nutrition vitamins for all your vitamin c for example, you need to fix your diet. You cannot and should not keep from eating breakfast for example, and justify it by saying you will take a vitamin instead. Eat your breakfast, then take your vitamin.

The purpose behind eating a well-balanced diet is to assure that a person is “fueling” their bodies with enough energy, or calories to survive, as well as with the essential vitamins and minerals necessary for several processes including metabolism, muscle contraction, protein synthesis and several others. The taste of food also plays a role in this in that it encourages people to want to eat. (This is why we need to retrain our bodies and taste buds to enjoy the taste of natural-not processed-foods). It’s really important that the bulk of these nutrition vitamins come from real food and not a pill. Why? Well, because vitamins have more “bioavailability” when they come from natural food instead of a pill or supplement. This means that the body is better able to absorb the vitamin in its natural state.

So, if we should get most of our nutrition vitamins from food, why take a supplement? Well, sometimes we just can’t get all the vitamins we need from food without overeating and consuming excess calories, for one. The second reason is lifestyle. Many of us are always on the go

Supplements can be useful in assuring we get an adequate amount of nutrition vitamins each day to be healthy.

and sometimes may not be able to ensure that we are getting all the vitamins we need. Another reason is age. Take for example, calcium… Calcium is a mineral that helps strengthen bones to prevent osteoporosis. As we age, our bones tend to become less dense and it is increasingly important to get sufficient amounts of calcium and vitamin D. A supplement helps us do just that.

There are also groups of people that nutritionists refer to as “special populations”- for example, pregnant or nursing women, athletes, and children…. These people need extra amounts of certain vitamins and minerals to meet the demands on their bodies to be healthy. Supplements do just that….Along with a balanced and well-devised diet, supplements can be extremely beneficial in helping keep our bodies functioning properly.

Today was Christian’s last day of school for the year (he was in pre-k). He just turned 5 and he’ll be ready for kindergarten in the fall. So we took him to lunch to have one of his favorite foods, sushi (but without the avocado – somehow we just can’t get him to like this great fruit).

Does sushi have enough nutrition & vitamins to better your health?

Does sushi have enough nutrition & vitamins to better your health?

We met a couple there that used to go to the same school as Christian and are now home-schooling their children. They say it’s great, their kids are advancing quicker, there’s no more stress in the mornings to rush and get out the door, they have more quality time with their kids, all-in-all a bunch of positives, and only one negative – it was a bit tough to prepare each days lessons.

My wife always opposed the home schooling idea because she felt the perceived lack of a social component would harm the development of Christian. What she didn’t know was that all home schooling programs include socializing not only with kids his own age, but also with older kids and even adults. This helps create a more social creature than one stuck with his same age group and development all the time – not knowing how to interact with older kids, or even adults. Whenever I told her this it just went in one ear and out the next, when the wife of the other couple told her she seemed to get it.

As we spoke more about home schooling, and how the quality of education they were receiving, along with the amount of contact time they have with their kids, the socializing, the extra curricular activities that involve more than just sports, but the arts like music, painting, etc, I started to think about how I could do the same for Christian.

As we were finishing off our lunch, and I’m watching Christian munching on plain lettuce saying “Yummy!” with an excited glee, and asking for more sliced carrots and ginger because he couldn’t get enough, I couldn’t help but smile knowing we are somehow responsible for this little creature, and are providing him with the best head start in life we could give him… good nutrition.
