			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So you&#8217;ve lost 20 pounds and you look great. You are getting tons of compliments from friends, family, and co-workers alike. Everyone looks at you like you are crazy when you tell them you are trying to <a title="lose more weight" href="http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2006-10-24-water-diet_x.htm" target="_blank">lose more weight</a>. You should be thrilled, right? Well, the reality of the matter is that for many people, after losing the bulk of the weight they had planned, they reach a level where they feel &#8220;stuck&#8221;.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a weird feeling because you feel good for what you have accomplished, but you can&#8217;t really bask in the glory or enjoy your moment</p>

<p>because you just can&#8217;t seem to <a title="lose more weight" href="http://www.harryjohnsonjr.com/lose-more-weight/want-to-lose-more-weight/" target="_blank">lose more weight</a> or to continue your progress for some reason. This ambivalent feeling of not knowing in which direction to turn is known as the dreaded &#8220;plateau effect&#8221;.  Now what many people don&#8217;t realize is that this &#8220;plateau&#8221; is actually a good thing. Now before you call me crazy, first you need to understand why this plateau effect happens in the first place, and maybe you will agree.</p>
<p>When you start a new exercise or fitness regimen, you are taking your body (and mind for that matter) out of it&#8217;s &#8220;comfort zone&#8221;. The new exercises are challenging and force you to move in new ways and push yourself physically to new limits. Your body needs to put in a constant effort to complete the task at hand. Your heart pumps faster, your lungs go into overdrive looking for sufficient oxygen, and your muscles are working more than they are accustomed to, causing them to release lactic acid for that wonderful &#8220;so sore I can hardly sit&#8221; feeling the next day. All these things require a greater amount of energy, which comes from calories. So, what&#8217;s the point? Well, simply put, new exercises tend to make you work harder and in turn, burn more calories.</p>
<p>Now over time, your heart and muscles become accustomed to a particular exercise, intensity level, and routine. If you&#8217;ve been jogging two miles everyday for the past year, for example, and you never increase your intensity or distance, you are probably quite used to the routine and no longer feel sore after your run. It has become second nature-routine. When this happens, our bodies do not need to work as hard as before and therefore do not burn as many calories. And this is where the &#8220;plateau&#8221; happens.</p>
<p>So now that you understand how it works, you continue to wonder why it is a good thing. Well, for one, it is a measure of success. It shows that you have become stronger than you were before and can now easily complete an exercise that you once struggled with. Secondly, it will hopefully make you crave a bigger challenge. It&#8217;s just like being in kindergarten-you learn your shapes and colors and ABC&#8217;s; the cookies and milk and nap time are comforting, but kids need to be challenged to reach their full potential. So, they move on to a higher grade level with new challenges.</p>
<p>The same goes for an athlete. That 2-mile jog may be a comforting routine after a hard day at the office, and it may be great to know you</p>

<p>lost those 20 pounds- but you and I both know you are more capable of bigger and better things. To reach your full fitness potential, you need to graduate to the next level. And there are several ways you can do this.</p>
<p>An easy way to challenge yourself is by increasing your intensity level or the amount of time you spend doing a certain activity. You can also change up your workout program and try new sports and activities. If you are a soccer player for example, you can continue playing soccer but mix in a few days where you maybe swim or do interval training on a track. If you are a bodybuilder or do strength training (which every one should do to some extent), increase your load or number of reps. Challenge your body-push yourself to the next level.</p>
<p>As a result of these changes, your body will have to work harder to adjust to new environments and situations, and in turn, burn more calories in the process. You will also most definitely increase your lean muscle mass which in turn burns fat and increases your resting metabolic rate allowing you to burn more calories even in your sleep! Now remember, in your quest to &#8220;lose more weight&#8221;, remember that weight alone won&#8217;t give you the whole picture. What you should aim for is fat loss. You may not see that scale budge after all that hard work, but I can assure you you will see positive and drastic changes in overall strength, endurance, muscle tone and definition.</p>
<p>So, don&#8217;t get discouraged if you hit that plateau. Instead, use it as a stepping stone to the next level on your fitness journey.</p>

<p>Most use the ending of an old, and beginning of a new year to reflect on what they&#8217;ve done, and what they still want to do in this world. New Year&#8217;s resolutions are a fertile time.</p>
<p>Topping most people&#8217;s resolutions are changing how their bodies look or simply to lose more weight. They want to get in shape and promise themselves they will do it this year. Yet the vast majority of people that start a new diet and exercise program fail.</p>
<p>If this has happened to you in the past here&#8217;s a sobering thought. Most people don&#8217;t understand that their outside reflection almost precisely mirrors their inner condition too.</p>
<p>Why is this sobering?<span id="more-2233"></span></p>
<p>Just take a look at the diseases, deaths, and overweight statistics in this country. It doesn&#8217;t take a rocket scientist to make the connection between how you look, and when and how you&#8217;ll die.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re overweight &#8212; even moderately, you&#8217;ve increased your chances of contracting diseases most think are attributable to old age, but are in fact directly caused by overeating and a lack of exercise.</p>
<p>Do you feel your health declining? Do you feel different than you did 10 years ago? Do you know this is a signal from your body that you are slowly dying? Of course we all die, but, having a choice, wouldn&#8217;t you rather live a robust, invigorated life, full of vim and vigor to the end? Or one riddled with disease? Decrepitude marked by your every step.</p>
<p>This choice, of course, is yours.</p>

<p>I created these lessons to help combat the powerful forces within &#8211; urging us to eat more and exercise less.</p>
<p>These are urges we can&#8217;t help&#8230;or ignore. Evolution has deemed them necessary for our survival. The key is working with, not fighting tooth and nail against them. This month&#8217;s lesson 4 shows you one more synergistic way you can work with the inherent strengths you have.</p>
<p>Over the last week I&#8217;ve given you three lessons on how to make it easier to get and stay in shape. This post brings lesson 4.</p>

<h4>LESSON #4:<strong> WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS, DRAFT A CONTRACT WITH YOURSELF, THEN SIGN AND DATE IT</strong></h4>
<p>In order to permanently succeed with your body transformation you must find your &#8220;supreme objective&#8221; and make all other elements in your life conform around it. Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, &#8220;We succeed only as we identify in life, or in war, or in anything else, a single over-riding objective, and make all othe considerations bend to that one objective&#8221;</p>

<p>And it’s not enough to just say the reason(s) out loud either, they must be written down.</p>
<p>As a contract between no one else but you and the good Lord these words will form a powerful force that will not only propel you forward on the journey you’re about to embark, but keep you glued to the wheel of your ship (your body) through the worst of storms.</p>
<p>I know, this sounds a little corny. In fact, I&#8217;ve had many people tell me they read this technique but never applied it because they thought it was mumbo-jumbo &#8212; feel-good, sound-good instructions without bite. It was only when they finally applied it, after failed attempts at changing their body, did they realize it worked like crazy.</p>
<p>Why does it work? What you’ve done by drafting this contract is you created a bonded instrument between your moral and physical self.</p>
<p><strong>BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING</strong> it does is remind you, everyday, of your promise. This is why you must place the contract in a conspicuous place where you have to read it. Drafting a contract but not reading it every day is the same as never having drafted it in the first place. The bathroom mirror, or your nightstand (where I kept mine) are good places.</p>
<p>In 1998 I won a National body transformation contest. While speaking with one of the executives of the company that sponsored the contest, I was told something that, at first, was a revelation to me. They told me that out of 20,000+ contestants that entered that year, only 7% finished their 12-week program. Most had dropped out by the half way point or way before.</p>
<p>At first this was a surprise to me. I asked myself how could so many people give up and fail to finish? I couldn’t understand nor comprehend it because there wasn’t one moment during my program that I even remotely considered the a possibility of giving up. My reason was too powerful (Lesson 1), I made a decision to change (Lesson 2), I had a deadline to meet (Lesson 3), and I reviewed my goals and contract every single day &#8211; no lie (Lesson 4).</p>
<p>But then I remembered the year before. I had entered the previous year&#8217;s contest and had dropped out too&#8230;just like 93% of the contestants did the year I won. And I didn&#8217;t do any of these lessons I&#8217;m revealing to you now.</p>
<p>Because I failed the year before I knew I&#8217;d be in the same boat again unless I put all the advantages I could on my side. I studied the principles common to successful people. Then I tailored them to maximize success for me. This principle is one of the 20 I came up with.</p>
<p>Would I have been as successful had I not utilized this particular principle? I doubt it. Reading my goals every night had a profoundly positive effect on my mind. After I started my program I honestly didn&#8217;t think I would win, yet I knew I would be successful at transforming my body.</p>
<p>Which group do you want to be a part of, the successful 7%, or the defeated 93%? You’ve heard it said before that the power to succeed lies in your hands. But this ethereal statement is never backed up with the “how-to&#8217;s” of success.</p>
<p>By following these principles you can harness an internal support system that will help you transcend problems or obstacles you will encounter along your path to a new body. And there will never be a doubt that you WILL ccomplish your goals.</p>

<p>But this is not exactly what this post is about (although reducing chemical ingestion is certainly an important topic).</p>
<p>This post is about how sunblocks are making you sick because they block almost all of the beneficial effects of the sun&#8217;s rays.</p>
<p>Sunblocks, and most car, office, and house windows, block almost all of the suns UVB rays.</p>
<p>&#8220;So what!&#8221;, you say. Here&#8217;s what&#8230;</p>
<p>There are literally thousands of bodily processes that are turned on and activated by vitamin D3. In fact, vitamin D3 is not really a vitamin, it is a steroid hormone precursor that your body needs to perform optimally.</p>
<p>Guess where we are supposed to get most of that vitamin D3 from?</p>

<p>You guessed it, the sun&#8217;s healthy rays.</p>
<p>&#8220;Wait a second Harry, I thought we were supposed to protect ourselves from the harmful rays of the sun?&#8221; you try and correct me.</p>
<p>Listen, I too was misinformed until only just recently. While I knew that putting chemical-laden sunblock on your body couldn&#8217;t possibly be deemed good for you, I had no idea that doing so could actually hurt us in more insidious ways.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s not going to be enough room here to discuss all of the important things you need to know about Vitamin D3, so I&#8217;ll just cover the highlights, and direct you to a more comprehensive resource later &#8211; it is a must read.</p>
<p>Ok, back to how the sun can help you to lose more weight. How is this possible?</p>
<p>First, the National Institutes of Health reports the following:</p>

Vitamin D deficiency has been linked with obesity. Vitamin D has recently been shown to lower leptin secretion. Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells and is involved in weight regulation. It is thought that this hormone signals the brain when fat cells are &#8220;full,&#8221; but exactly how the hormone controls weight is not entirely clear.</p>
<p>Additionally, obesity by itself probably further worsens vitamin D deficiency due to the decreased bioavailability of vitamin D(3) from skin and dietary sources, because of its being deposited in body fat.</li>
<li>Syndrome X:<br />
Vitamin D deficiency has been clearly linked with Syndrome X. Syndrome X refers specifically to a group of health problems that can include insulin resistance (the inability to properly deal with dietary carbohydrates and sugars), abnormal blood fats (such as elevated cholesterol and triglycerides), overweight, and high blood pressure.</li>
<li>Diabetes:<br />
Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with insulin deficiency and insulin resistance. In fact, last year it was shown that vitamin D deficiency is likely to be a major factor for the development of type one diabetes in children. (Type 2 Diabetes typically results in obesity)</li>

Insulin resistance is also one of the major factors not only leading to some cancers, but also to the number one killer in the US, heart disease. <p><strong>Latest research shows that proper sun exposure increases athletic performance.</strong> One of the ways it does this is by increasing the number of type II (fast-twitch) muscle cell fibers. <h4>So What Should You Do To Get Enough Vitamin D?</h4>
<p>There lies the tricky part. If you took a line from the norther part of California and drew it across the Nation over to Boston, and you live North of this line, you might be Vitamin D Deficient. The UVB energy is not sufficient above this line from November to February to give you adequate vitamin D from the sun. In far Northern latitudes, this reduced intensity lasts for 6 months. Latitudes below a line between Los Angeles and Columbia, SC allow for cutaneous (through the skin) production of vitamin D throughout the year.</p>
<p><strong>HOWEVER</strong>&#8230; <span style="text-decoration: underline;">even if you live in the southern latitudes, you still may not be getting enough sun to produce adequate vitamin D.</span></p>

<p>Some of the latest literature shows that you need to expose yourself to approximately 15-20 minutes of uninterrupted direct sunlight to at least 40% of uncovered skin on your body&#8230; every day. When you first start to feel and see a little pink on your skin, you&#8217;ve had enough.</p>
<p>But if you live in the southern latitudes, and it&#8217;s sunny all the time, you&#8217;re still likely not getting adequate vitamin D from the sun. Just stepping outside from your house to your car, then again from your car to your office, will NOT give you adequate sun exposure. Even if your office has direct sunlight pouring in (same thing with your car windshield) you will not get the UVB rays you need because glass blocks UVB radiation but still lets in the harmful UVA &#8211; bad combo. Only UVB activates vitamin D.</p>
<p>Now, don&#8217;t go thinking that you&#8217;ll just go out and get some vitamin D3 or cod liver oil (the most concentrated food source) and start popping pills like there&#8217;s no tomorrow. Vitamin D3 is stored in your fat cells and as such, can become toxic if taken in too high quantities. How much is too much? It&#8217;s hard to tell as it depends on a multitude of variables. Age, skin pigmentation, health status, conversion hormones.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s very hard to make a blanket statement on how much you have to take to get the desired positive effects. You&#8217;re best bet is always to use natural sunlight. There are some tanning beds that produce UVB light, you&#8217;ll have to ask around. But they usually don&#8217;t produce UVB light. If it&#8217;s really loud when operating it likely does not produce UVB rays.</p>

But in fact, vitamin D3 is triggered by the suns exposure to your skin and the cholesterol that lies just underneath your skin, close to the surface. And it takes some time for this initial substance (a kind of pre-vitamin D3) to travel from your skin to your liver where it can be further converted in the active form your body needs. So just wash your &#8220;pits&#8221; after a good sunbath, and don&#8217;t use soap on those parts you exposed.</p>

<li>turkey</li>
<li>whole eggs</li>
<li>egg substitute  (i.e., &#8220;egg beaters&#8221;)</li>
<li>healthy oils (virgin olive oil, flax oil, UDO&#8217;s choice blended oil &#8211; which can be found at your local health food store).</li>
</ul>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Here are two example meals:</strong></span></p>
<p><strong>Example Meal 1:</strong><br />
2 1/2 cups of the following mixed vegetables:</p>
<ul class="bull">
<li>Brocolli</li>
<li>cauliflower</li>
<li>green beans</li>
<li>sliced zucchini</li>
<li>lima beans (small amount only &#8211; remember, only 2 cups TOTAL &#8211; this doesn&#8217;t mean 2 cups of <em>only</em> lima beans, which are a bit heavy on the carbs).</li>
</ul>
<p>8 extra large shrimp<br />
1 tablespoon of olive oil<br />
salt and pepper to taste</p>
<p><strong>Example Meal 2:</strong><br />
4 ounces of Chicken Breast<br />
Salad that consists of the following:</p>
<ul class="bull">
<li> Raw collard greens (tastes better than it sounds)</li>
<li>Shredded cabbage</li>
<li>Kale (chopped)</li>
<li>Swiss Chard</li>
<li>Tomato</li>
<li>Cucumber</li>
<li>Red/Green Pepper</li>
</ul>
<p>About 2 cups total of the above combination of hearty salads. Then add, white or apple cider Vinegar and 1 tablespoon of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and salt and pepper to taste.</p>
<p><strong>Traditional breakfast foods are &#8220;out the window&#8221;</strong> on these days (remember, no bread, or pancakes, or waffles, or french toast, etc.; save this for your &#8220;anything goes&#8221; days &#8211; stay tuned for details)</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">You&#8217;ll eat 4-5 of these meals every day for 5 days.</span></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Then, on the 6th day, you can eat anything you want&#8230; and I do mean anything</strong></span>. And in any quantity you desire. For some example meals just go to the top of this article to see what some of my favorite foods are.</p>
<p>On the 7th day you&#8217;ll go back to eating your &#8220;healthy&#8221; meals again. But this time you&#8217;ll only have to eat them for 4 days before you have your &#8220;anything goes&#8221; day.</p>
<p>If you add intense exercise to the mix, you&#8217;ll be able to reduce the time period between your &#8220;anything goes&#8221; day to 3 days.</p>

<p>As I drift off to sleep, having had a wonderfully enjoyable day of eating my favorite foods, I remember I&#8217;ll be checking my skin-fold thickness in the morning to check my bodyfat levels. This morning I measured in at 8 mm on my abdomen skin-fold thickness. I wonder what will happen tomorrow&#8230;</p>
<p>As the alarm sounds, I groggily get up out of bed and stumble over to the bathroom and pull out my trusty <a title="lose more weight" href="http://tinyurl.com/BodyFatCalipers" target="_blank">digital bodyfat calipers</a>.</p>
<p>Pinching the same spot on my stomach I&#8217;ve pinched countless times before, I feel strangely &#8220;lean&#8221;. In fact, it&#8217;s not such a strange sensation at all, as I&#8217;ve felt it on numerous occasions in the past. It&#8217;s just that I know what I ate the night before and by all logic I should be feeling quite bloated by all common sense of the &#8220;normal&#8221; rules of eating.</p>
<p>Looking at the reading (6.5 mm), I  smile as I dropped 1.5mm from my reading the morning before, meaning I&#8217;ve lost &#8220;even more&#8221; bodyfat in the 24 hours since I last measured &#8212; even after eating like a horse the day before.</p>
<p>Do I have a tapeworm?</p>
<p>Is there an alien living inside of me, feeding on every morsel of food passing into my stomach?</p>
<p>Do I have a third leg?</p>
<p>None of the above, my dear friend.</p>
<p>I simply employed a unique, and highly-effective technique that allows me to eat whatever, however, as much as I want, several times per week AND lose fat quicker and easier as a result.</p>
<p>YOU DID NOT MISREAD THIS LAST PART&#8230; (So I&#8217;ll say it again).</p>
<p>You can Lose fat quicker and easier by eating junk food on a regular basis &#8212; but only if you  follow my rules of the road.</p>

<p>Oh, by the way, before I let you go I have a riddle for you&#8230; <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">let&#8217;s see who is smart enough to figure it out</span></strong>&#8230;</p>
<p>My skinfold thickness on my abs went &#8220;down&#8221; from the day before. This means I lost fat. HOWEVER, I gained weight from the previous day?!? How is it that I can lose fat but yet gain weight?!? What is the answer to this seemingly impossible occurrence?</p>
<p>The first 3 people that answer this correctly (there should be 2 parts to the answer &#8211; you have to explain &#8220;why&#8221; I gained weight and the mechanism behind it &#8211; you don&#8217;t have to explain why I lost fat&#8230; leave that to me tomorrow) will get 1 bottle of my new Creafit (creatine/ribose/glutamine combo) supplement.</p>
