<p><strong><em>&#8220;Hi, it&#8217;s Susanne Phillips, do you know who I am?&#8221;</em></strong> began the call.</p>
<p><strong><em>&#8220;Why yes, I do know who you are Susanne&#8221;</em></strong>, I nearly choked. You see, Susanne was the mother of Bill Phillips, the owner of EAS and originator of the Body For Life contest, the one I had entered that year (technically Body For Life didn&#8217;t originate until the next year, but that&#8217;s another story for another time).</p>
<p><strong><em>&#8220;Good!&#8221; </em></strong>said Susanne, <strong><em>&#8220;because we&#8217;ve been trying to get in touch with you for a couple of weeks and I&#8217;d almost given up!&#8221;</em></strong>, she exclaimed.</p>
<p><strong><em>&#8220;You&#8217;re a finalist in this year Physique Transformation contest and I wanted to speak with you a bit and ask you a couple of questions&#8230; do you have a moment?&#8221;</em></strong></p>
<p>Do I have a &#8220;moment&#8221;? she asked? I mean, come on, the mother of the one person I had so admired was calling me on the phone asking me if I had a moment to talk about being a finalist in the biggest body transformation contest in the world?  Uhhhh, well&#8230; &#8220;Yes!&#8221;</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">That conversation started a 2 week road to discovering the ultimate secret to really getting in shape.</span></span> It was nothing about the latest fat burning  tips, or some rehashed science spouted as new, or a miraculous supplement that would magically transform my body.</p>

<p>Well, this is a tricky question because the answer is, it all depends. First of all, it depends on the person. Are they really motivated to lose weight? Will they be honest in their nutritional choices and follow the trainer&#8217;s advice? But there is another really, really important question to ask, and that is &#8220;WHO is the trainer?&#8221;</p>
<p>The problem with personal trainers is, they are every where. Any gym you go to has personal trainers, the internet is teeming with them. Also, there are several institutions that offer certification classes to potential trainers, but only a handful of these are nationally accredited institutions-and that fact alone makes a HUGE difference in the QUALITY of training and preparation a trainer receives.</p>
<p>Fitness trainers are supposed to be professionals that (along with your doctor&#8217;s o.k) can create and guide you through a fitness program that is right for you. Their job is more than just providing you with <a title="fat burning tips" href="http://bodybuilding.about.com/od/howtoachieveresults/a/fat_burning_tip.htm" target="_blank">fat burning tips</a> and an occasional &#8220;good job&#8221; during a session. Some people need to hear more encouraging words to keep moving while others love the &#8220;boot camp&#8221; style of training. Whatever you prefer, be sure that the trainer is effectively communicating whether or not you are headed in the right direction. You will be spending quite a bit of one-on-one time with your trainer so be sure it is someone who is compatible with your personality while still giving you the &#8220;tough love&#8221; you need to reach your fitness goals.</p>

<p>how many sets, etc.). This article will help shed some light on why it is so important that every woman be involved in and adhering to a strength training program. You actually might be involved in a strength-training program right now. Even if you are, I want you to really pay attention to what we&#8217;re going to cover for the rest of the article.  I&#8217;m sure it is going to have you thinking differently about why you should be lifting weights from now on.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re going to talk about why developing a strength training program will ultimately help you lose weight, add some muscle tone, look better and feel better about yourself. It is one of the best <a title="fat burning tips" href="http://bodybuilding.about.com/od/howtoachieveresults/a/fat_burning_tip.htm" target="_blank">fat burning tips</a> I can give you. We will go over some &#8220;myths&#8221; about strength training and the real facts behind them. So, whether you&#8217;re new to strength training or you&#8217;ve been doing it for years, pay close attention. Let&#8217;s first clear up some of the misconceptions about strength training and the truth behind these myths.</p>
<p>This first myth is the &#8220;biggie&#8221; and it has prevented many women from strength training. It sounds a little something like this: &#8220;I don&#8217;t want to lift weights because I don&#8217;t want to get bulky.&#8221; Let&#8217;s explore that myth a little. When you think of weight lifters, you probably think of body builders, right? You think of the men and women on ESPN parading around in little swimsuits with big bulky muscles popping out all over the place. There are three reasons for this:</p>
<p>1. These people are an extremely minute percentage of the population.</p>
<p>2. That is their livelihood and they spend 4 to 5 hours a day in the gym.</p>
<p>3. Many of them are using performance-enhancing drugs (steroids, etc.) to look like that.</p>
<p>So if you can get that image of the &#8220;bodybuilder&#8221; out of your head and think in terms of the average everyday person, you will see why the myth about getting bulky is just that, a myth! What we&#8217;re going to talk about next is simple. When you lift weights your body builds muscle. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn (even at rest).   The more calories you burn the less you weigh.</p>
<p>Now you might say to yourself, &#8220;But if I lift weights, my muscles will get bigger, I will appear big and bulky, and wind up weighing more.&#8221; This is also a myth. That myth being one of the most popular in the world of exercise, which is, &#8220;muscle weighs more than fat.&#8221; That&#8217;s like the old joke, &#8220;What weighs more&#8211;10 lbs. of steel or 10 lbs. of feathers?&#8221; Hopefully by now you know that the answer to that question is that they both really weigh the same.  10 lbs. is 10 lbs. no matter what it is made of. Let&#8217;s examine this point in a little more detail.</p>
<p>Muscle is much more compact than fat. It actually takes up less space than fat does because of its density. That makes sense, right? Fat, on the other hand, is very soft and jelly-like and occupies more space than muscle does.  Let me give you another example to clarify this a little more. If you were to take 10 lbs. of fat and 10 lbs. of muscle and roll each of them into a ball, the 10 lbs. of fat might be the size of a bowling ball. In comparison, the 10 lbs. of muscle would be about the size of a baseball. Now let&#8217;s use this as a real life example using woman #1 and woman #2 in an example.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s say for arguments sake, both women are 5&#8242; 5&#8243; tall and both weigh 140 lbs. Woman #2 does not lift weights or do any kind of strength training. Her dress size is a size 12. Woman #1 on the other hand, lifts weights and follows a strength-training program each week.  Her dress size is a size 8. If these women were standing side by side people would definitely think that woman #1 weighed less than woman #2. But in reality they both weigh exactly the same. How can that be? Think of what I said before, muscle takes up less space than fat. Of those 140 pounds that each woman weighs, what&#8217;s the percentage of fat and muscle on each woman?</p>
<p>I would venture to guess that woman #1 has a very low body fat percentage and woman #2 has a much higher body fat percentage. How did woman #1 get such a low percentage of body fat?  Two words—STRENGTH TRAINING (in addition to cardio exercise and eating healthy, but this article is just touting the immense benefits of strength training). That brings up another good point I&#8217;d like to make. The weighing scale is the worst indicator of losing FAT. It will tell you that you&#8217;ve lost weight, it&#8217;s great at that. But what if you lose 10 pounds of fat and replace it with 10 pounds of muscle?  Will you have lost weight? According to the scale, NO! Will you have lost FAT? Absolutely, and I guarantee that your clothes will be a lot looser on you and you will look and feel a lot better. If you can do one thing with your scale I would recommend throwing it in the garbage, or at least getting rid of it.</p>

We all know the feeling of the extremely powerful hunger pangs you feel when you&#8217;ve gone a long period of time without eating. And, what usually happens after a prolonged fast? The problem is that the quick, easy, and tasty foods are usually foods that are not going to help you stay lean and maximize nutrition.</p>

<p>do to keep hunger at bay. The first is to consume at least 5-6 very small meals per day, making sure your total calorie levels are below your maintenance requirements. This is one way to curb your hunger pangs.</p>
<p>Water also goes a long way toward helping you feel fuller and reducing your feelings of hunger. A lack of water has also been shown to reduce your metabolic rate, which is the last thing you want to happen on your body transformation quest.</p>
<p>Removing temptation from your house is another way to dramatically improve your efforts to avoid negative eating habits. My willpower is no stronger than anyone else&#8217;s. I know that, if I have goodies in the house, I am much more likely to indulge than if I had to get in the car and go to the store to buy them. If there is nothing there for me to munch on when I get the urge for something sweet (except prescribed foods), I have a much smaller chance of &#8220;falling off the wagon.&#8221; And this is where healthy snack alternatives, such as fruit, come into play.</p>
<p>For me, melon or cantaloupe is an excellent snack. You won&#8217;t believe how incredibly good they can taste when you are craving a sweet snack. They are high in natural sugars that give them a distinctly sweet taste. Plus, they are loaded with fiber and super-packed with antioxidants, so are quite good for you. The fiber will fill you up in no time &#8211; I promise &#8211; with minimal damage to your calorie levels. Keep in mind that these <a title="fat loss tips" href="http://www.harryjohnsonjr.com/weight-loss/weight-loss-occurs-when-you-burn-more-calories-than-you-consume/" target="_self">fat burning tips</a> do not give you carte blanche to eat it all the time: it is a very good way to combat powerful urges.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m going to excerpt a lot of what you&#8217;re going to read from Dr. Robert O. Young&#8217;s book, &#8220;Ph Miracle&#8221;, a highly recommended book. Another highly recommend book if you&#8217;re interested in delving even deeper into why EFA&#8217;s are absolutely essential to add to your diet is Dr. Udo Erasmus&#8217;s excellent book, &#8220;Fast That Heal, Fats That Kill&#8221; best-seller. Both are must-reads.<br />

<p>EFA&#8217;s are found in fish and seed oil, and include omega-3 and -6 fatty acids. Fatty acids are normal parts of all human cells, and are especially abundant in brain cells, nerve synapes, visual receptors. adrenal glands, and sex glands.</p>
<p>EFA&#8217;s are so important you might be deficient&#8230; and not even know it.</p>
<p><strong>Here&#8217;s the real deal&#8230;</strong></p>
<p>The highly processed foods we eat strip all of the EFA&#8217;s from our foods. Why? Anything that adds heat to the food &#8211; simply processing it, even cooking it &#8211; destroy&#8217;s the EFA&#8217;s found in that food. The reason is EFA&#8217;s are highly heat intolerant. This is why they always come in brown bottles (to shield them from the light) and must be kept refrigerated because just leaving it out at room temperature for a couple of days will make it go rancid.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Here&#8217;s a test for you,</span></strong> it&#8217;s not perfect, but for a lot of people it&#8217;s indicative of whether the amount of EFA&#8217;s you&#8217;re taking are sufficient. <strong>CHECK YOUR ELBOWS</strong>&#8230; if the skin is smooth and velvety, with no discoloration there at all (the skin should look exactly like the texture and color of the skin on your forearm) then you might be taking in enough EFA&#8217;s.</p>
<p>If it&#8217;s a little rougher and drier than the surrounding skin areas, then you&#8217;re likely EFA deficient. Obvioulsy, this doesn&#8217;t count if you add lotion to the area to artificially smooth it out. Evaluate your skin there without adding any lotions.</p>
<p>So, dry elbows = EFA deficiency. Here&#8217;s what you can do.</p>
<p><span id="more-2054"></span></p>
<p>First, let me explain to you why EFA&#8217;s are so critically important for your health, and to help you lose fat. Let&#8217;s look at the omega-3 fatty acids first. The omega-3&#8217;s (EPA and DHA) help</p>

<p>reduce toxins in your blood; they lower levels of repair proteins in the arteries. Repair proteins are also involved in the development of atherosclerosis, so lowering them is a double bonus.</p>
<p>Omega-3 fatty acids offer much more in the way of protection for the heart: They help disperse saturated fatty acids, which like to stick together, thereby avoiding lumps of fat in the blood that dampen electrical charges. They keep blood platelets from getting too sticky, resulting in lower likelihood of clots that can cause heart attacks or strokes. They lower triglycerides by up to 65 percent. They lower cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL &#8211; the bad cholesterol). They lower very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL &#8211; the REALLY bad cholesterol) by half. High triglyceride levels, and especially LDL and VLDL, are associated with cardiovascular disease: high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, heart and kidney failure, stroke, and heart attack. Furthermore, our bodes make prostaglandin PG3 from EPA. PG3 helps prevent strokes and heart attacks, lowers high blood pressure (by blocking the production of pressure-raising PD2&#8217;s found in meat), and prevents pathological blood clotting in the lungs and blood vessels.</p>
<p>And if that&#8217;s not enough for you, animal studies have shown EPA and DHA to inhibit the growth and metastasis (the spreading of disease to other tissues in the body) of tumors.</p>
<p>EPA and DHA are found in cold-water fish and other northern marine animals. Trout, salmon, mackerel, sardines, tuna, and eel are the richest sources of omega-3 fatty acids. For those who wish to avoid animal products, there are plant sources for a precursor to EPA and DHA, another omega-3 called alpha-linoleic acid (ALA), including flax, hemp, walnut, and soybean oils. <p>In  brand new tests conducted at Arizona State University, subjects who  took 1 1/2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar ate on average 200 fewer  calories at the next meal.</p>

<p>There are certain types of fats that actually promote more     of a weight gain than others.</p>
<p>The best types of fat to help prevent weight gain (by fat storage) are  certain mono- and poly-unsaturated types of fats. These are olive oil  and omega-3 fats found in fish and several plants (the flaxseed being  one of the most well known).</p>

<p>The worst types of fat to eat are the more saturated types of fat found  in abundance in animal meats (although there are many good types of red  meat with minimal amounts of saturated fat).</p>
<p>One study showed animals gained 1/3rd more bodyfat on a high-    saturated diet than on a high monounsaturated diet.</p>
<p>I personally love salmon although there are many who stay away from it  because of its high fat content compared to other fishes. However, the  fat found here is pure, heart healthy, omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA  to be exact. These particular ESSENTIAL fatty acids have also been  shown to be potent fat uncouplers. This means they help &#8220;break apart&#8221;  the fat cells on your body so they can be burned more readily.</p>
<h2><strong>4. EAT INSULIN REGULATING FOODS</strong></h2>
<p>There are certain foods that elicit a very small insulin output in  response to eating them. This is important because insulin is a very  potent &#8220;fat storage&#8221; hormone. If insulin levels are consistently  raised, the chances of your storing the food you eat as fat in  increased. Also, keeping insulin levels (and subsequently your blood  sugar levels) low helps curb your appetite as well.</p>

<h2><strong>5. BULK IT UP TO KEEP THE FAT OFF</strong></h2>
<p>Fiber, fiber, and more fiber&#8230;.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">This is the key to long term success in keeping the weight off</span>. You  will prevent weight gain, and even increase weight loss, if the foods  you eat are high in bulk, or fiber, and low in calories.</p>
<p>The trick to think of is to <strong>target foods that &#8220;take up a lot of space&#8221;  on your plate</strong>. Not only will they take up more room in your stomach,  but they typically take longer to eat as well. This is important  because it allows your &#8220;satiety reflex&#8221; to kick in. This takes anywhere  from 20-30 minutes.</p>
<p>How many times have you eaten a calorie-loaded food like cheesecake in  2 minutes flat and yet  have not felt full? Trust me, so have I. And, we have not even come close to allowing enough time to pass to allow our satiety reflex to  let us know we&#8217;ve eaten enough. So we&#8217;re still hungry. And we continue  eating although the amount of calories we&#8217;ve taken in is more than  enought already for that meal.</p>
<p>This leads to overeating and plenty of fat storage as well because your  body just doesn&#8217;t need all those calories at one time.</p>
<p>But choosing a high fiber (bulky) food requires much more time to eat  due to the extra chewing required. This extra time allows you to become  satisfied with a much smaller calorie load.</p>
<p>Adding additional fiber to your diet can triple the amount of weight you can lose.  Try to aim for at least 25 grams per day minimum. 35-50  grams per day would be best.</p>
<p>The best high fiber foods are some of the fruits and vegetables listed  above in addition to some high-water foods such as soups, stews, and  casseroles.</p>
