Confession!
Posted by: | CommentsMy confession…
Today is Sunday, November 2nd…
However, two days ago, October 31st, I was in the middle of a raging, full-on Halloween party here on South Beach. It was almost midnight, and I wanted to get “one more meal” in under the wire for my high-calorie day. I wasn’t super hungry, but I was at one of my favorite restaurants, NEXXT, on Lincoln Rd.
I was waiting for my brother, who I hadn’t seen yet (check out this photo and video to see his outrageous Halloween costume as well as the other revelers that night… CRAZY!).
What to eat… oh, the decisions…
I settled on spaghetti carbonara, a favorite of mine.
When I finished my “huge” meal, I clocked in at 6,710 calories for the day. 52% of it carbs, with a full 36% of it being fat.
To say I felt “stuffed” was the understatement of the year.
I really felt like I “blew it!”
I mean, I confess to you that I honestly felt in my heart “there is no way eating this way AND this much food is in any way good for me… and surely there’s no way this is going to help me lose fat…”
I honestly started to doubt my methodology. I mean, imagine eating this for the day:
Breakfast: 4 Dunkin’ Donuts with 16 ounces of Chocolate Milk
Mid-morning: 3 more Donuts (ah shoot… the hell with the details… I had an entire dozen donuts that day. 2-Jelly filled, 2-glazed, 2-Bavarian Cream, 2-Krullers, 2-Pumpkin donuts (in honor of Halloween), and 2 “outrageously delicious who knows what they’re called and who cares because they taste so damn good” donuts).
Here’s the 20-second video of breakfast. Dunkin’ Donuts Breakfast.
And just to show you that I didn’t just take a bit of a donut, here’s another quick video showing major “damage” to the box of dozen donuts. After 4 Dunkin’ Donuts.
After going to my son’s Halloween recital Here
I went to Denny’s and had Pancakes with butter and syrup and a 32-ounce Ice-Cream shake (a mere 1 1/2 hours after my donut-eating binge).
The rest of the day was filled with eating the rest of the donuts, Haagen-Daazs “dulce de leche” caramel ice cream, rice, and snickers bars.
Even though I felt like it couldn’t be right eating this way, I “knew” I was doing the right thing by eating this way… because I had done this so many times in the past before with excellent fat loss results. Not to mention the many other people I coached to do this.
Here’s some other reasons why eating this way helps you lose fat faster:
1. Eating this way AFTER a prolonged period of low calories and low carbs takes all the sugar you eat and fills up the depleted glycogen (sugar) stores in your muscle cells and liver. You have to eat this way for over 48 hours in order for your muscle and liver glycogen-holding capacity to get full and then start filling up your fat cells.
2. Eating this way boosts your metabolism in a big way. Make that a HUGE way. Imagine throwing massive amounts of gasoline on a simmering fire… that’s what happens to your metabolism when you eat big this way (only as I prescribe though, following 3-4 days of low-calorie, low-carbohydrate, moderate fat (40% of calories), high-protein (40-45%) meals with lots of exercise during those days to deplete your muscle cell’s glycogen stores)
3. You WILL gain weight eating this way for a couple of days. R-E-A-D this next sentence carefully and PLEASE, PLEASE believe it. You WANT TO GAIN AS MUCH WEIGHT AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN when you eat this way. And… drink a TON of water too. Water will help you gain more weight especially when you are eating a lot of carbohydrates because each part of carbohydrate (glycogen) you take in binds to three parts of water and gets stored in all the right places (your muscle cells primarily).
BEFORE YOU THINK I’M OFF MY ROCKER please believe there is science behind this seeming madness. Which leads to number…
4. Eating this way helps turn on your bodys muscle building machinery – it is VERY anabolic (build up of muscle tissue – YOU WOMEN ESPECIALLY BETTER BE READING CLOSELY HERE!!!). Why? Because your muscle cells become “hydrated” with the influx of glycogen and water along with the nutrients they bring along for the ride – the building blocks for your muscle tissue.
Everything you do in the gym should be to build muscle, or prevent any loss of muscle.
Why?
Muscle is very active, metabolically speaking. Muscle has veins, capillaries, and nutrient needs far surpassing that of an equal amount of fat, which kind of just sits there on your body. And this is VERY IMPORTANT if losing the most fat you can is important to you.
Let’s assume all things are equal between two people except the amount of muscle one has on their body compared to the other. One has 10 lbs more muscle than the other one. The person that has more muscle will have an easier time staying in shape. Since muscle burns fuel sitting there on your body, you have to supply that extra muscle with fuel. This means one of two things has to happen. One, you’ll have to eat more than the person with less muscle on their body (hmmm, starting to sound good, right?). Or second, if you don’t eat more, the increased demand for “fuel” from that extra muscle will be generated from, you guessed it, your fat stores.
Please re-read the above paragraph again…
It says by having more muscle, you can either eat more?!? Or… you will be able to lose fat easier?!?
That’s right, simply by having more muscle.
FOR YOU WOMEN THAT ARE STILL SCARED OF ADDING MUSCLE TO YOUR BODY…. DON’T BE!!!
Women simply CANNOT build appreciable amounts of muscle like men can. Even most men have a hard time building muscle easily. Women who concentrate on building muscle will do so at the expense of their stored bodyfat (for the reason I mentioned above), and will have lean, sexy muscle. Men who concentrate on building muscle will have a leaner, ripped look, with less fat on their body.
ISN’T THAT WHAT BOTH SEXES ARE AFTER?
The bulked up women (and men) bodybuilders you see are ALL on synthetic male hormones that allow them to build up their unnatural amount of muscle mass. It is almost impossible for any woman to build that kind of muscle naturally. Let’s say you’re one in a billion that can? Just stop working out so hard, your muscles will shrink, and just use intelligent dieting to stay in shape. Count yourself as one of the lucky “blessed genes” ones.
PROOF, PROOF, PROOF!!!
If you’ve been following along here, you’ll see I have made, what some might say, almost unbelievable fat loss progress. AND LOOK WHAT I’VE BEEN EATING!!!
I know, it doesn’t sound, nor does it probably feel right. BUT I DIDN’T MAKE THE RULES TO HOW OUR BODY WORKS. I just interpreted how it works to my (and your) advantage.
Stay tuned, December 5th is just around the corner (when I’ll be giving away my BODY MAPS TO FITNESS SUCCESS and a couple of extra surprises like maybe my exact diet diary I used to lose 16 lbs of fat and gain 12 lbs of muscle in only 24 days).
