<p>don&#8217;t feel like exercising?</p>
<p>While this can happen to the best of us, it doesn&#8217;t mean you should drop the ball altogether when it comes to staying fit and building a healthy <a title="body for life" href="http://www.recipes4health.com/" target="_blank">body for life</a>. This can happen to even the most seasoned athletes, most toned bodybuilders, most dedicated fitness enthusiasts. The fact is, we are all human and there are days that we just may not be feeling 100% inclined to working out.</p>
<p>While scheduling in pre-planned rest days in any fitness program is a great idea, there is a fine line between resting your body and running from your commitment to exercise. If you notice that your &#8220;rest days&#8221; are taking up most of your time, you may be in need of a little fitness &#8220;pick-me-up&#8221; or motivation. Now the bad news is that motivation has to come from within you. You need to somehow spark that flame inside that convinces you to drag your little sedentary behind to the gym. The good news? You, more than anyone knows what motivates you! You just have to find out what that motivational source is! Maybe it&#8217;s your kids, your wife, fitting into your pre-pregnancy skinny jeans, completing a marathon, wearing a string bikini and being proud of what you see in the mirror. Whatever it is, use it to your advantage.</p>
<p>Place objects, pictures, clothing, magazine articles or anything that reminds you of your jmotivation and goals where you will see it often. I had one person tell me that she really wanted to lose the belly fat she accumulated after giving birth to her son that she loved more than anything in the world. Sure enough, a couple months down the road she looked great and much more toned. I asked her what her motivation was and she just chuckled.</p>
<p>She explained to me that she would feel so guilty for not going to the gym sometimes that she would just give up, go to the fridge, and eat something sweet since she had &#8220;messed up already&#8221;. She did this until one day she ran across a store selling &#8220;knick knacks&#8221; and household items. And right in the window was a magnet that made her laugh-AND realize that she didn&#8217;t have to give up the war for one battle lost. The magnet had a picture of a female hippopotamus eating chocolate, and read, &#8220;A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips!&#8221; Needless to say she started laughing and bought the magnet right away. She placed the magnet on her fridge to remind her of her goals and of the consequences of her actions. From that day on she said every time she saw the magnet she would get her running shoes on!</p>
<p>So, what motivates you? Sit down and reflect on your life, your fitness goals, and where you are on your journey to achieving your <a title="body for life" href="http://www.harryjohnsonjr.com/body-for-life/want-to-win-the-body-for-life-contest/" target="_blank">body for life</a>. And while external reminders such as pictures-or magnets-can help motivate you, it is the INTERNAL changes you feel that make your efforts all worth while!</p>

Before you take off like an overlarge airplane and start preparing for the Olympics trials, stop right there. You may have it all figured out by now, after checking with your friends, the media and finally that fickle fiend known as the bathroom mirror, that a regular exercise program is the only way to fly when it comes to permanent weight loss. That entails working out or otherwise flexing your physical and psychological muscles on a regular basis, perhaps three times a week, or maybe even once per day. But therein lies the rub. How do you get started? How often do you exercise? Most importantly, if you&#8217;ve been very sedate or at least somewhat off your feet for awhile, what&#8217;s the safest way to begin an effective, weight-loss centered exercise program to achieve your ideal<a title="Body For Life" href="http://bodyforlife.com/exercise/index.asp" target="_blank"> body for life</a>?</p>

<p>running around the block. That&#8217;s why the medical profession exists, to advise and keep you safe. Your doctor will recommend specific types of exercise tailored to fit your own individual lifestyle, personal health needs and concerns to safely achieve a healthy <a title="Body For Life" href="http://www.harryjohnsonjr.com/body-for-life/achieve-a-health-body-for-life-through-daily-exercise/" target="_blank">body for life</a>. But you don&#8217;t need to make it entirely clinical when you begin an exercise program. Most importantly, you need to pick something you&#8217;re going to stick with. What do you like in the way of sports? If you&#8217;re people-oriented, you should look into joining a team sports program of some kind in your area, one created for adult participation. You can look for a local softball league, take a beginning aerobics class at a fitness center, or play regular games of basketball at a gym with your buddies. And then there&#8217;s golf, the perennial favorite of people who want to perform fun and interesting mild exercise. All you have to do is motivate yourself and perhaps some friends to get started. Or if you&#8217;re a loner, you can take up an individualized sport such as bicycle touring, which can also be done in small groups, or laps swimming at your community pool. But be realistic, and work with your doctor. You want to aim for something fun that you&#8217;ll keep committed to doing regularly.</p>
<p>Simply walking around the block is a very inexpensive and potentially fun way to go from a sedentary state to a beginning new level of much better health and fitness. You must start with something easy and simple if you haven&#8217;t been exercising for decades, and you should gradually increase your level of activity as you feel comfortable with it. Move by inches, not by miles. Eventually, you can try exercising every single day, anywhere from twenty minutes to a full hour. But especially at first-and that may be for several months-don&#8217;t push yourself too hard. Don&#8217;t go all out, and get frustrated because you can&#8217;t keep it up. You don&#8217;t have to be a college athlete, and you can seriously hurt yourself by pushing too hard or overdoing it. Remember, you&#8217;re doing this for fun, for health reasons and to feel good about yourself. Don&#8217;t try to become an &#8220;athlete&#8221; unless you think that will be something you&#8217;ll want to commit to on a much more rigorous schedule.</p>
<p>Americans tend to think of exercise as more their duty than as a part of their culture, or &#8220;way of life.&#8221; But</p>

<p>it&#8217;s a true lifestyle preference. Throughout the world, many forms of regular exercise are taking hold of whole general populations. Take walking, for example. In Europe, people are flocking to their local well-developed public hiking trails, and there&#8217;s quite a few of those spread across the USA as well. Walking of a moderate type is called Volkssport in Europe, and it&#8217;s really been around for many centuries. Easy-going exercise such as walking continues to stave off heart disease, osteoporosis, high cholesterol and many types of cancer, as well as taking care of most of your belly flab. Not to mention that the worst investment you need to make is a pair of comfy, sturdy sensible shoes, preferably made of leather or canvas with rubber soles.</p>
<p>You must also remember to keep it simple when you&#8217;re losing weight. In most cases, burning more calories than you ingest is the biggest concern. You have to expend approximately 3,500 calories to lose one pound of adipose fat tissue. Water weight doesn&#8217;t count, and that&#8217;s what a lot of people lose at first. Also, the important thing about exercise is that you can eat almost normally and still lose the weight at a healthy and reasonable pace. If you don&#8217;t exercise and try to lose weight, you&#8217;ll be tempted to embark on a starvation diet. This has been shown to make you lose lean muscle mass instead of fat in most cases, and although you&#8217;ll drop some pounds, they may be the wrongest ones. Chances are that if you&#8217;re unfit while you&#8217;re losing weight, you&#8217;ll get physically tired, sleep less, become overly emotional, and stress out and become extremely irritable. It simply isn&#8217;t healthy to do it that way, so you need at least a moderate exercise program.</p>
<p>Try keeping a journal of your progress every day, and consult with it when you want to know how far along you&#8217;ve come. You can also use it to gauge how you&#8217;re doing, and whether or not you&#8217;re losing weight at a reasonable pace. Congratulate yourself every time you ate the right thing, kept to your walking schedule, or didn&#8217;t give in to temptation that day by making a brief note about it. Read the journal to inspire you about what you&#8217;re doing whenever you feel the urge to let go. Don&#8217;t forget to share any successes or failures with your friends and family. Tell them all about how proud you are of the new lifestyle choices you&#8217;re making, and share in their enthusiasm. They want you to be healthy and go on living, and so do you. But some of them may worry that you&#8217;re starving yourself or are in a state of denial. Reassure them, and proceed carefully with your healthy diet and exercise plans, while always knowing that it&#8217;s exactly what you need to do to look better, feel stronger and live longer.</p>

<p>can take a major toll on both women and men alike. Exercising or following a daily workout routine of 30 minutes is sometimes the last thing on our minds these days. This poses a problem and is most definitely a problem that can be resolved since despite all these pressures, we still manage to find time to watch TV or hang out with friends.</p>
<p>We can come up with hordes of reason for not hitting the gym or going out for a run. Being fit should be a part and priority in everyone’s life, but the truth of the matter is, for most Americans, it&#8217;s not-and this needs to change. Being physically fit helps you live a longer, more fulfilling life. It means more than looking your best on the beach or finishing first in the marathon. It means lowering the risk of heart disease, stroke, depression, diabetes, insomnia, cardiovascular disease, asthma, obesity and hundreds of other problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle and taking care of your <a title="Body For Life" href="http://www.harryjohnsonjr.com/category/body-for-life/" target="_blank">body for life</a>.</p>
<p>By keeping yourself physically fit, your body learns to deal with the stresses of daily life. Incorporate going to the gym as a daily habit like brushing your teeth or taking a shower. Devote at least a good 30 minutes to an hour for exercise to make you look and feel fitter, healthier and happier. Besides helping reduce the risk of devloping life-threatening diseases, regular exercise increases flexibility to maintain muscular tension and tones muscles to build and maintain healthy bones and a strong heart.</p>
<p>If you decide to put off going to gym, you will miss out on the benefits mentioned above and much more. 30 minutes to an hour of physical fitness is major health investment and a step towards taking care of your <a title="Body For Life" href="http://bodyforlife.com/" target="_blank">body for life</a>. If this is your first step in the fitness world, get in touch with gyms or personal trainers to see which fitness plan suits you the best. You will also come across adverts with promises of keeping you in the best of shape. Learn to differentiate between what is real and the hundreds of gimmicks out there. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.</p>
<p>After you decide on your fitness plan, you have to start working on the same to stay in shape and keep fit. Don’t go overboard on the first day as you might feel very exhausted or burned out. To reach your ideal level of fitness, be sincere, consistent and stick with the program. Remember, consistency is key.</p>

<p>In the last 1 1/2 weeks though, I&#8217;ve stepped it up again to try and get down to an even lower level of body fat (I have these last vestiges of love handle fat I want to get rid of completely).</p>
<p>If you want me to help you win the <a title="Body For Life" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSewP00isHY" target="_blank">Body For Life</a> contest, or just get into the greatest shape of your life, read on. I&#8217;m going to show you how easy it can be done, and how enjoyable the foods I get to eat are that are getting me there. So in that 1 1/2 weeks, I&#8217;ve dropped my body fat level down to around 5%.</p>
<p>How have I done this?</p>
<p>Simple, by following my Body For Life contest-winning program (REMEMBER: When I won the Body For Life contest it was not called the Body For Life contest but the Physique Transformation Contest &#8211; we were on our own and had to come up with our own programs). There&#8217;s only a couple of tenets you have to key on in order to achieve great fat loss success.</p>
<ol>
<li>You MUST track your calories every single day. I cannot begin to tell you how important this is. If you&#8217;re not willing to do this, you won&#8217;t be able to lose weight. It&#8217;s almost guaranteed.I know for me that I have to write down everything I eat in order for me to reliably lose fat. Even after all these years of doing this there are errors in estimating the calories you&#8217;re eating. If you guess on this critical component of losing fat, you&#8217;ll always guess wrong. Here&#8217;s a free site that I use to track all of my foods. In fact, you can go there and see the foods I eat and track on a daily basis (search for &#8220;easchamp&#8221;). <p>Can I tell you something? I felt pretty bloated. I literally had to force myself to eat so much. Before you think I&#8217;m off my rocker, I have to tell you that I sacrificed for you. <p>eliminate the FEAR a lot of you may have with eating this way. Logically you think there is no possible way someone, anyone, can eat this much food and end up leaner the next day. I mean, it sounds impossible right? If I hadn&#8217;t done this myself many, many times, over and over again, I too would probably feel the same way.</p>
<p>THERE&#8217;S A BIG BUT&#8230; however&#8230;</p>
<p>You have to preface this type of eating with a specific (but altogether enjoyable) diet AND exercise protocol. If you do, you can actually eat this way every 3rd day. This means only 2 days of eating a specific way and training using a certain methodology, and then you can EAT TO YOUR HEART&#8217;S CONTENT.</p>
<p>This particular eating day I went outside of my usual envelope in both calories AND fat content. I usually try and stick with only high-carbohydrate/low-fat/low-protein meals for my &#8220;anything goes&#8221; days. As you can see above, most of the meals were anything BUT low-fat (donuts, Haagen-Daazs, and olive oil are all high in fat). But it didn&#8217;t matter as my body caliper readings still went down.</p>
<p>Would you like to eat these kinds of foods on a regular basis? And still lose lots of fat? I mean, isn&#8217;t this the nirvana we&#8217;re all after? Well it&#8217;s not only possible, but it&#8217;s staring you straight in the face right now, right here.</p>
<p>In the middle of writing this blog post I found out Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett both died today&#8230; Yesterday, Ed McMahon (long-time Johnny Carson sidekick) also died.</p>

<p>In thinking about these 3, one thought came to mind. They lived life to the fullest and accomplished many great things in their time here.</p>
<p>Life is short, and the end can come at any moment. Only one knows when. Have you done everything you want to do in this world? What&#8217;s holding you back. I&#8217;m just as guilty as anyone else and have many things I still want to do that for a variety of reasons, mostly internal negative behaviour, I have not accomplished. I&#8217;m using these well-known celebrity deaths as a wake-up call for me. We only get one chance.</p>
<p>Stop pussy-footing around and get into great shape if that&#8217;s what you really want to do. You have the path right here in front of you. It is a well-worn one too, that is tried, and proven, not only by me, but many, many others that have used it as well. If you don&#8217;t want to get my program I understand. But don&#8217;t let that stop you from studying what I&#8217;ve written here, and utilizing this knowledge I&#8217;ve outpoured for you to transform your body.</p>

<p>I was tired&#8230; of how my body felt, how it moved, how sluggish I felt all the time. I had no direction, no motivation. I had ambition&#8230; but no drive to fuel it.</p>
<h3><strong>The Beginnings of Change </strong></h3>
<p>The beginning of 1997 was when it all started to change&#8230;</p>

<p>I remember looking through past issues of Muscle Media, the magazine created by Bill Phillips, owner of <a title="body for life" href="http://www.harryjohnsonjr.com/body-for-life/what-do-you-mean-i-didnt-win-the-body-for-life-contest/" target="_self">Body For Life</a>, the megalith sports supplement company, and was struck with a thought. &#8220;What if I could become one of those people in his magazine that completely transformed their body too?&#8221;  I let the thought simmer in my head as I really started to study the people that bravely sent in their before and after photos for the world to see. Yes, their physical transformations were incredible&#8230; but I was looking for something more. I was trying to look into their eyes&#8230; their souls even&#8230; to see if these people were any different than me.</p>
<h3>No Progress</h3>
<p>Busting my butt for the previous 7 years, I had been trying to somehow change my body. But it wouldn&#8217;t change. And I was tired of all the work with no results. So in really studying these &#8220;before and after&#8221; <a title="Body For Life" href="http://www.bodyforlife.com" target="_blank">body for life</a> transformations of men and women, I needed to know that these people were no different than me. And I needed to know why they could achieve such startling changes so quickly&#8230; and I couldn&#8217;t&#8230;</p>
<p>After dissecting the photographs of hundreds of these men and women I came to one conclusion&#8230; these people were no different than I was. I said it in my head, and I felt it in my heart and soul. &#8220;If these ordinary people could do it, then I could do it as well.&#8221;</p>
<h3>The Decision</h3>
<p>And it was then that something clicked inside me&#8230; it was a simple but profound decision&#8230; <strong>I WAS GOING TO DO THIS!</strong></p>
<p>So I started to train, and exercise, and supplement. And I started to make changes. But then, I quit! Yes, I stopped training, stopped exercising, stopped doing everything these people did to transform their bodies so dramatically.</p>
<h3>Hurdles and Roadblocks</h3>
<p>What happened? I got divorced. The stress of the divorce caused me to turn to food as refuge and comfort. Back then, I rationalized not being able to complete my body transformation journey because of the stress I was experiencing. Looking back, I realize it was simply an excuse. And I used my divorce as a &#8220;larger&#8221; and more important reason to quit, than the reason I was using to transform my body in the first place.</p>
<p>Even more depressed and without direction than ever, another year went by. Then I saw the photos of the winners of the previous years contest: Porter Freeman, Jeff Seidman, Meredith Brown. And I saw hundreds more photos of people that entered and didn&#8217;t win, but nevertheless champions as well because of the remarkable transformations they made.</p>
<p>This time I knew  if I wanted to join the winner&#8217;s circle, that I would have to do more than just &#8220;go through the motions&#8221;. So I searched internally for the reasons why I was doing this contest, what it meant to me, what my core desires for doing this were that would propel me through thick and thin. I realized now I had to find these reasons because &#8220;life&#8221; has a way of side-tracking all the best laid plans &#8211; unless &#8211; you have a reason stronger than the inevitable hurdles and roadblocks you will encounter.</p>
<h3>Find Your Core Desires and Never Quit</h3>
<p>Then, I wrote down those reasons, and passionately envisioned achieving them. Even while working for NASA as an aerospace engineer, I realized I was meant to do something else with my life. I envisioned winning this contest would allow me to pursue my dream of having my own company, helping other people get in shape, creating quality supplements that enhanced the quality of life for everyone that took them. This is what drove me.</p>
<p>1998 was still full of hurdles. My father died 2 months after I completed my transformation. But this time my core reasons were stronger than anything that could have presented itself as an obstacle for me.</p>
<h3>I Did It&#8230; You Can Too!</p>

<p>I was crowned Body For Life champion in my age group category that year. Proud and honored to be recognized by my hero was an understatement. I was on top of the world. I thank Bill Phillips for putting together this genius of a concept &#8212; one that starts with the premise that by changing your body, you can change your whole world as well. Thank you Bill!</p>
<p>What&#8217;s your reason? Figure it out then &#8220;bend&#8221; your world to conform to what it is you truly desire. Anything is then possible&#8230;and you CAN do it!</p>

<p>I know, for the past 10 years I&#8217;ve been advertised as the <a title="Body For Life" href="http://bodyforlife.com/community/blog.asp" target="_blank">Body For Life</a> winner but technically, I am really not.</p>
<p>I know, you might have seen my name in all the magazines that came out that year, and you see my photo here inside Muscle Media magazine promoting me as the 1998 Body For Life Champion. <img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-472" title="all-systems-go-original-mm-table-of-contents-10-percent1" src="http://www.harryjohnsonjr.com/wp-content/uploads/all-systems-go-original-mm-table-of-contents-10-percent1.gif" alt="all-systems-go-original-mm-table-of-contents-10-percent1" width="227" height="304" />And you might have followed my column, &#8220;All Systems Go&#8221; in Muscle Media magazine where I helped answer people&#8217;s toughest diet/fitness/exercise questions and helped many people get in shape with my advice.</p>
<p>But I have to confess to you I did not win the Body For Life Championship in 1998. What I did win was the <span id="more-470"></span>1998 <em><strong>Physique Transformation Challenge</strong></em>.</p>
<p>&#8220;What?!?&#8221;, you might be wondering.</p>
<p>Yes, it&#8217;s true, Body for Life, the book, did not come out until the summer of 1999., the year <strong><em>after </em></strong>I won the 1998 Physique Transformation Challenge (which was the name of the precursor to the Body For Life contest).</p>
<p>When I won the contest that year I was <em>literally </em>all alone, had no help at all (remember, Body For Life was not invented yet), and was forced to invent a <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>&#8220;brand new&#8221;</strong> way to diet and exercise</span>. Why brand new? I&#8217;ll tell you why in a second&#8230;</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s why I bring this up now&#8230; after all these years.</p>
<p>You see, before I won the 1998 Physique Transformation Challenge I had struggled for over 8 years, literally killing myself, trying to figure out a way to get in shape. I mean, just take a look at my &#8220;before&#8221; photo here &#8211; and this was after working out like a mad man for those 8 years. <img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-473" title="before-picture" src="http://www.harryjohnsonjr.com/wp-content/uploads/before-picture.jpg" alt="before-picture" width="115" height="206" /></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what I came to realize after those 8, grueling years&#8230; my genetics sucked!</p>
<p>I mean, come on, don&#8217;t you think that anyone with even a shred of good genetics on his or her body would have at least looked a little better than my before picture showed?</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Here&#8217;s the real deal&#8230;</strong></span> I&#8217;ve ALWAYS had a hard time losing fat. I always had this layer of fat covering my body that would just not go away, no matter the diet I tried, the exercise routine I hoped would &#8220;be the one&#8221;, or the &#8220;magical supplement&#8221; that promised to transform my body but never delivered. To top it off, I couldn&#8217;t even build any appreciable amount of muscle either. To say I cursed my genetics many, many times in those 8 years is an understatement.</p>

I felt the same way until I <em>experienced </em>in fact this <em>was </em>real. So real it was documented in print, in writing, and even on video.</p>

<p>&#8220;I started my interest in fat loss and weight maintenance in Medical School 25 years ago.  I tried a number of weight maintenance/weight loss products back then because I had gained 20 pounds during Medical school.  I knew that with exercise and the appropriate diet I could lose the weight but I always would plateau and not be able to fully affect change around my waistline.  Products such as hydroxycut and the like worked, but I was jittery and irritable and noticed changes in my liver enzymes.</p>

<p>Did I reach my goal?</p>
<p>Measured my bodyfat this morning and I was at 5.3%.</p>
<p>In 1998 when I won the Body For Life contest I got down to 5.6%.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s exactly 10 years later (I&#8217;m now 49) and the digital bodyfat calipers I used don&#8217;t lie. Neither do the photos (forthcoming &#8211; I&#8217;m traveling in California and will upload for you on Monday)</p>
<p>Ladies and Gentlemen&#8230;</p>
<p>I can honestly say it was easy, and very pleasurable losing 25 lbs of bodyfat over the last 49 days. Imagine not depriving yourself, not having hunger pangs, doing some &#8220;great&#8221; things for your body and health through the foods you eat and the supplements you take. And then&#8230; being able to literally have your cake too by eating your favorite foods every 3rd or 4th day? And knowing that eating those foods (ice cream, cake, cookies, bread, rice, potatoes, pancakes, etc) are actually HELPING YOU LOSE FAT QUICKER?!?</p>

You&#8217;re at lunch and you whip out your donuts, or rice pudding, or bread or cake and you glance over at the dumbfounded look on the face of your co-workers and you just KNOW they&#8217;re thinking, &#8220;how the heck is he eating that stuff AND losing weight too?!?&#8221;</p>
